The Rocks of Sydney were originally occupied by the Cadigal people. When European settlers arrived, they laid claim to the land, building their first camps on the sandstone cliffs. This primitive settlement expanded into a full port community. Originally inhabited by convicts from Europe and their overseers, the early days of the community were filled with gangs, seasoned sailors, and a very tough life.
