Too Many Cars in Sydney
Thursday 17, March 2011
For anyone who has tried to drive in Sydney, there can be no
question they're simply too many cars on the roads, and an insufficient
public transport system definitely doesn't help alleviate this sad
problem.
It might just be time for people to return to the basics of
transportation and start engaging again in walking and cycling to get
where they need to go, whether it's work, school, or to a host of social
and recreational activities.
It's hard to imagine just how well Sydney will survive in ten years with
all the cars and traffic it has to deal with, especially since the
majority of families have two or even more cars. If there was more money
available, then better transportation systems could be built including
more advanced and streamlined railroad systems. Moreover, roads could
indeed be widened into more lanes.
But these events don't seem that likely to happen in the future in
Sydney because funds simply are not available and not enough are on the
horizon even if taxes were raised across the board. And businesses,
schools and shopping areas are not going to move any closer to the homes
where people live so the distance to travel to these essential places
will still be just as far as they are now.
One excellent solution; if most people would begin to and continue to
carpool on their way to work. They need to stop being so independent
and always wanting to be the only person in the
car. It should be made a law that all people commuting to work or school
in cars must have at least four people in their vehicles in a
carpooling effort to keep fewer and fewer
cars on the road in Sydney.
This has been effective in many other parts of the world in
substantially reducing traffic.
